Painting with Cold Wax

Cold Wax Medium
This is a wonderful painting medium, a bit like painting with butter

The safest way is to add your pure gum turpentine or citrus solvent to the wax in a glass jar and leave for a couple of weeks to dissolve. I have not had a great deal of success with this method.Or my preferred method is to heat the wax ( You can use either premade encaustic medium or straight beeswax) and then remove from the heat and add the pure gum turpentine stirring till well mixed and allow to cool. Begin with a 50/50 mix and adjust until you have a mix you like. Remember it can always be thinned by adding more turpentine when cold to make a glazing consistency
For a quick alternative to try but some beeswax based furniture polish

I mix my cold wax medium with dry pigment and a little walnut oil on a glass plate
you could use a white ceramic plate

This is the beginning of some pieces of cold wax painting
on watercolour paper covered in traditional gesso
some lovely red oxide to begin

then yellow ochre

indigo blue
I use raw natural indigo powder
This is a painting done entirely with
cold wax medium,
walnut oil,
and natural pigment

Here it is finished with scratching
and rubbed with indigo and walnut oil

And second piece before

and after

Tide Marks

Tide Marks
all natural mixed media on board
30 x 30cm

$250 plus postage

this is the view I have
each day on my morning walk
looking out over the mudflats
to the sea

I glued down a piece of silk noil
over 2/3rds of the board
and then applied starch paste over most of it
and scratched into it
milk paint has been applied and then ink
which was washed off
after it had thoroughly dried
I have added wax and dry pigment

This is the piece I entered into the local art prize
I did not win anything
and it is likely I will be bringing it home
but I am good with that
we are living in a fully furnished apartment
and the art is not to my taste

Quiet times at Chez Shed

Not a lot has been happening down here
in the deep south of
Western Australia

We did go out wood collecting
last weekend
should be cozy for the rest of the winter now

and the weekend before that
I was up in Perth
I attended a very interesting
Egg Tempera workshop
with
Glen Stewart

and this I produced
when I got home
I put it out in my studio
yesterday

and after hearing much
kerfuffling out there last night
today I found a few extra marks
teeth marks!!!
courtesy of Ratus ratus
Not the collaboration I had in mind
but still interesting.
Up to Perth again on Sunday
will be there for a whole week this time
Dan is doing a 4 day course and
I shall be amusing myself

Beginnings

starch paste on traditional gesso applied to and open weave cloth on masonite

Over the last couple of days I have been putting together
some painting substrates

Starch paste on plaster applied to and open weave cloth on masonite

and I though some of you might be interested in my process

just plaster

so here we go

plaster and starch paste on heesian applied to pine

I am hoping to get some underneath texture to pick up colour as I apply paint
but being a natural girl I don't use such things as gel/acrylic medium
so i gots to find otherways

plaster and on heesian applied to pine

plaster likes to pop right off pine
well it likes to wait a couple of months and suprise
you one day

so to try and combat that i have applied
an open weave cloth a light one on the smaller pieces
and hessian/jute on the bigger ones
this should give it something to grab onto

plaster and on heesian applied to pine

the starch paste is to give some idea of a horizon line
so I will be vaguely referencing landscape
paint will be added tomorrow

on the toipic of my process
I have been asked by Dorie to teach in the Netherlands
next year May/June 2013
and as you can imagine that is an awfully long way
so I am hoping there might be a few more places that
would be interested in learning my particular brand of madness
And with a lovely mention by the fabulous India
how could I possibly go wrong

please contact me or leave a comment
if you would like to host me.
